Set in Northern Vietnam in 1945, Van Tai—the son of a mandarin—enters an arranged marriage with Thi Mau, but soon becomes entangled in a complex relationship involving his fiancée, his widowed sister-in-law Thi Lieu, and Thi Nuong, Thi Mau’s cousin, leading to a dramatic conflict of love, honor, and desire.
